At ABC PET CLINIC in San Ramon, we want pet owners to understand the importance of vaccinations for their beloved pets. If you want your dog or cat to live a long and happy life, you must keep it immunized against the many common diseases that threaten it on a daily basis.
Vaccinations break down into two categories: core vaccines and non-core vaccines. Core vaccinations are those recommended for every pet, while non-core vaccines may be advised based on your pet's lifestyle. For example, we may suggest certain non-core vaccinations if your cat or dog is outdoorsy or boarded or often.
Rabies vaccination would fall under a cored vaccine. Other Common diseases ABC PET CLINIC can protect your dog against include distemper parvo virus, leptospirosis, Lyme, and Bordetella (the cause of "kennel cough"). Whether your cat is indoor, outdoor or both they should be vaccinated against vaccine FVRCP which is sometimes referred to as "Cat Parvo". It is actually a combination vaccine consisting of -feline viral rhinotrachetus, feline calicivirus, and feline panleukopenia.
Puppies and kittens typically receive their first set of immunizations at the age of 8 weeks. Rabies shots typically begin at the age of 16 weeks. the immunity from vaccines has a limited lifespan, so boosters every 1-3 years are required to keep the immunity going. We carry a variety of vaccines to cover different illnesses (even rattlesnake bites!) Instead of pushing every possible vaccine into your pet, we will set a schedule of those vaccines your pet realistically needs to maintain the best health.
